Bring your bicycle and come to the Darling Run access to the Pine Creek Rail Trail on Saturday, September 5, 2009 from 10:00am-Noon for a ‘Geology Bike Hike.’ Have you ever wondered what events occurred during the creation of the Pine Creek Gorge? Come explore the clues along the Pine Creek Rail Trail, and learn about the geology of the Pine Creek Gorge.
We will ride south through the gorge to Little Four Mile Run. The trip from Darling Run to Little Four Mile Run is a four mile bike ride. Your guide will provide interpretive information on the
geology of the Pine Creek Gorge only for the trip south to Little Four Mile Run, you can choose to bike further south on your own. Bring water and a snack to enjoy at the waterfalls along Little Four Mile Run if you like.
Bicycles will not be provided, but can be rented at nearby outfitters. Children under 12 years of age must wear bike helmets. The program will be canceled in the event of severe weather (participants may contact the park office to confirm cancellation in the event of severe weather). Meet at the Darling Run Contact Station. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks (Hills Creek State Park) and Steps to a HealthierPA are teaming up for the second annual Step Outdoors Triathlon. Teams of three and individual participants are welcome to register for the run (3.1 miles) - paddle (2 miles) - bike (9.1 miles) competition.
* Registration fee (by Septebmer 1, 2009): $25/individual, $75/team
* Late and race-day registration fee: $30/individual, $90/team
* No Rain Date. Triathlon will be held rain or shine.
* Bike Route: approximately 65% is dirt road, 30% is paved road, and 5% is grass. All roads are public. CLICK HERE to view some of the terrain you will encounter on the biking leg.
